The Western Cape workshops will be held at my studio and home in SirLowry’s Pass near Somerset West, Western Cape.

At my studio I am equipped for working  from life including things such as a proper easel, palette setup, model stand, equipment to build backgrounds, different light sources that I can adjust, dark walls to stop reflection, high ceilings, windows with curtains where I can control light up to appoint of completely block out natural light.

I can give my best here and people can come to a full understanding of what it takes and how I function.

The cost of the workshops at my studio in Sir Lowry’s Pass is R6 500.  This includes tea, coffee and lunch. Modelling fees.

Workshop Description

Workshop will run over an intense 5 day period.  I will be sharing everything I know and hard earned knowledge from trial and error over the years and my many trips overseas where I have studied with other artists and having spent countless hours in museums studying the work of the old master artists.

I will be spending a whole day on some vital principals such as your posture, drawing and how to measure properly in order to transfer information accurately on to canvas drawing from life. (I have discovered over time in classes that there is a huge gap concerning this, that though people think they know how to measure but they don’t and are forever struggling) So I am here to help and make it easy! To bring understanding, showing in detail and communicating everything that I am thinking and processing. After which everybody will have an opportunity to draw so that I can make sure everyone grasps the concept. We will not be here to preform or impress but to learn and understand.

On other days I will demonstrate painting portraits and or still life in different light conditions such as direct and indirect light. Students would be able to see the artwork develop from beginning to end which is life changing. The one thing I do and give attention to is to voicing everything I do and think so that students can learn how to do their own problem solving back home. If you can see what I see you would be able to do what I am doing!

We will also be discussing images of masterworks such as Sargent, Sorolla, Fechin and others to demonstrate principles of accurate edge control, value control and colour temperature. All these are works that I have studied and photographed in person in various museums overseas.

Weather permitting we will do a plein air study to learn what information needs to be captured in order to make a bigger studio artwork. The whole process of conveying all the information will take me a full 4 days. Students will then be given the opportunity to paint. It is more important spending time giving the student as much information as possible teaching and equipping you to be able to grow on your own.

This workshop is applicable to artists of all levels. Beginners can be taught the right stuff from the word “GO!”
